Donne comes to mind: "No man (or country) is an island." This reminded me of a comment that some pundit or other made just after 9/11. They said that those living in the United Kingdom couldn't understand what was happening in America because they were living in a "pre-9/11 world". This angered me no end, showing a complete ignorance of the happenings anywhere outside his small little bubble. Never mind that terrorism has been a reality in the UK for most of the last century thanks to the IRA. Anyway, thanks Nalin for this beautifully written and apropos commentary.
